Concept

Climbing Mt Adatara (one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains), Mt Azuma-Kofuji and Mt Issaikyo; climbing Mt Bandai (one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains); and trekking around Goshikinuma. A 4-night, 5-day hiking tour: stay at ‘mt.inn’ in Nihonmatsu Dake Onsen on the first night, at the ‘Azumagoya Lodge’ mountain hut on the second night, and at the ‘Grandeco Hotel’ (altitude 1,040 m) on the third and fourth nights.

 

Enjoy a special overnight stay in a mountain hut, a favourite among hikers. Climb two of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. Admire the two Goshikinuma lakes in Fukushima Prefecture.

Mt Adatara: An active volcano in central Fukushima Prefecture, standing at an altitude of 1,700 metres, and is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. It is also known as the setting for ‘The Real Sky’, a poem featured in Kotaro Takamura’s poetry collection *Chieko-shō*.

 

Mt Issaikyo: A mountain on the border between Fukushima City and Inawashiro Town, Fukushima Prefecture. It is one of the mountains that make up the Azuma Mountain range. It is an active volcano that is still volcanically active, and its summit is covered with rock rubble. The elevation is 1,948 metres.

Mt Azumakofuji: An active volcanic mountain with an elevation of 1,707 metres in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture. It is one of the Azuma Mountain range. It has a large mortar-shaped crater and is so named because it looks like a small Mt Fuji when seen from the Fukushima City side.

Mt Bandai: 1,816-meter active volcano, selected as one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan, and is considered one of the symbols of Fukushima Prefecture. It is a popular mountain for climbers due to its excellent views.

Day 1

15:30 Pick-up at Fukushima Airport (tour coach)

17:00 Arrival at Nihonmatsu Dake Onsen mt.inn.

18:00 Dinner (times may vary.)

Day 2

8:00 Departure from mt.inn

8:30 Adatara Mountain Ropeway; start of the hike

​12:00 Lunch (packed lunch) near the summit

14:30 End of hike; take the Mount Adatara Ropeway

16:00 Arrival at Azumagoya Lodge (a 90-year-old mountain hut at an altitude of 1,576 metres).

16:30 Walk around Mt Azuma-Kofuji (1,707 metres) and Okenuma Pond (no guide will accompany you)

18:00 Dinner (set menu)

21:00 Lights out (Lights out times are strictly enforced in mountain huts to conserve energy.)

Day 3

7:30 Breakfast (set menu)

8:40 Departure from Azumagoya Lodge (on foot).

9:00 Arrival at Jododaira Visitor Centre; start of the climb (altitude 1,600 m). (A guide will accompany the group)

10:30 Arrival at the summit of Mt Issaikyo (1,948 m). Viewing of Goshikinuma Pond. (There are two Goshikinuma Ponds in Fukushima.)

11:00 Departure from the summit.

12:00 Arrival at Kamanuma Pond, lunch (packed lunch).

12:40 Departure from Kamanuma Pond.

14:00 Arrival at Jododaira Visitor Centre (1,600 m)

14:30 Arrival at Azumagoya Lodge(1,576 m), coffee break.

15:00 Departure from Azumagoya Lodge (tour coach).

17:00 Arrival at Grandeco Hotel.

18:00 Dinner (times may vary).

Day 4

8:00 Departure from the hotel (tour coach).

8:30 Arrival at the Urabandai Ski Resort trailhead; start of the hike (904 m) (accompanied by a mountain guide).

9:30 Akanuma (1,116 m)

12:00 Arrival at the summit of Mount Bandai (1,816 m); lunch (packed lunch).

12:50 Start of the descent.

15:00 Arrival at Happodai car park (1,194 m), met by the tour coach.

16:00 Arrival at the hotel.

18:00 Dinner (times may vary).

Day 5

7:30 Breakfast (times may vary).

8:30 Check-out.

9:00 Goshikinuma trek (no guide will accompany you).

10:30 Goshikinuma trek ends; depart for Fukushima Airport by tour coach.

14:00 Arrival at Fukushima Airport (dispersion point)

*As the accommodation on Day 2 is a mountain hut, it consists of a mixed-gender dormitory (10 people) in the same area as the dining room, one private room (maximum 3 people) and a room for the tour leader (1 person). Toilets and showers are shared. Travel agencies should inform customers that they will be staying in this type of mountain lodge (not a standard hotel) and obtain their consent.

Please note that other accommodation is hotel-style. Accommodation is based on two people sharing a room.

This tour is organised on the assumption that you will be arriving on a flight to Taiwan via Fukushima Airport; however, it is also possible to meet and disband at the West Exit of JR Koriyama Station. Please contact us to discuss this.
